The latest antivirus performance report released by AV-Comparatives (opens in new tab) wasn’t quite as positive, however. More impressively, it also detected and neutralized 100% of 0-day malware attacks, easily exceeding the industry average of 99.1%. In the December 2019 Report (opens in new tab) of German comparison lab, AV-Test, AVG Antivirus was able to block 100% of prevalent malware samples thrown at it. It’s not leading the market though, so you may want to look elsewhere for top-tier protection.
Thanks to the combination of Avast and AVG’s previously distinct antivirus engines, AVG Antivirus does well when it comes to detecting both known and novel security threats. This basically looks and operates like a more secure version of Google Chrome, protecting you from dangerous websites by forcing HTTPS encryption, masking your digital fingerprints, and blocking tracking scripts.

The other notable difference isn’t so positive for AVG. While you won’t use this feature every day, it’s a good thing to run from time to time, and there’s also a handy feature that alerts you to any new clients that have joined since your last scan, to help spot any intruders. In its place, you get a network scanner that probes all the devices on your network for security vulnerabilities. One difference between the Avast and AVG packages is that AVG doesn’t include the free VPN.

Avg antivirus upgrade#
The other three just bring up pages inviting you to upgrade to the full AVG Internet Security suite. It’s also hard to overlook the fact that, of the five main buttons, only two relate to features that are actually included in the package. It’s not obvious what’s available, nor where to find it. Frankly we’re not fans: the controls are split between big card-type buttons in the centre of the window and various buttons and menus on the periphery.

And when AV-Test pitted the software against an array of both zero-day and widespread threats, AVG cleaned up with a perfect 100% score. In AV-Comparatives’ online protection test, AVG’s achieved a superb score of 99.8%, nosing ahead of Microsoft Defender on 99.6%.
