

He incorporated the song into his concert set list, and before long, fans were requesting an official version. “Little did I know that song, coming off that show, was actually going to take on a life of its own and be a little bit of an underground hit for us,” the singer continues.

“CMT comes and says, ‘Okay, well, what Bryan Adams songs do you want to do?’ And so I sent them my Bryan Adams songs,” Jason explains. Each CMT Crossroads episode pairs two artists from different genres for a collaborative set of songs across both their catalogs. “When you do those, you kind of look at songs that you want to record,” the singer explains. It’s a song that he’s actually been covering for years, Jason reveals, dating back to a CMT Crossroads performance he and Adams gave in 2009. And it's a style that I've kind of dabbled in a little bit over the years with some things. “It's really bluesy and just melodically really cool. And then a few days later we were cutting her vocal, and a couple weeks later it was at radio.” It was written, we went in a couple days later and tracked it, got it to Carrie. The way it happened was so weird and just happened so quick. It just felt kind of patriotic, and a lot of stuff it was talking about was really relevant to right now, to me, and just kind of struck me in a certain way that I was like, ‘Man, I really want to say that, what that song's saying.’” And it's worked out really well in the past with ‘My Kinda Party’ and ‘Dirt Road Anthem’ and some of those. And he kind of does that every time we go in the studio, he'll call me up and send me some songs. “I was driving in my truck one day and I got a call from Brantley Gilbert.
